It was with deep shock, pain and regret that the AGIR program collaborators received the news of the violent death on the 7th of October of longtime civic and social activist Anastácio Matavel. He was member of some AGIR Partners and once again exercising his activism by participating in a training of electoral observers as a way of contributing to the transparency and credibility of the upcoming electoral processes in Mozambique on the 15th of October. Anastácio believed in fair and free elections as a key factor for the consolidation of peace, democracy and human rights necessary for the country development. Merciless and in a dramatic act, and so disrespectfully to human life, with recourse to firearms, his life was ended prematurely at 58 years of age. Mourns his family, friends and colleagues from civil society in Gaza and the country at large.
We hope that the authorities will clarify the crime, disclose its culprits and bring them to justice so that no longer Mozambicans who are peacefully striving for a prosperous and democratic country have to fear for their live. May no other citizen or member of Mozambican Civil Society Organizations be killed just for exercising his or her rights according to the low or by believing that a better Mozambique is possible.
On behalf of all AGIR program contributors, we address our most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Above all we say goodbye Matavel, rest in peace, others will continue with your mission and one day Mozambique will be the country you always dreamed it would become.
